10 Years Of Concert Photography

Skillet – Carnival of Madness 2013

10 years ago, August 9, 2006, I shot my very first concert. I have met a ton of awesome photographers, security guards, promoters, bands and fans. I have gotten to see a ton of great shows and photograph some of my favorite bands, including, but not limited to: Breaking Benjamin, Incubus, Deftones, Sevendust, Taproot, Story of the Year, Cage The Elephant, Soundgarden, Shinedown and Halestorm.

It is crazy to think how things have changed in these past 10 years. I have changed jobs twice, bought a house, got a dog (Lucy) and upgraded my camera gear a few times. I started out with a Canon Rebel XT with the kit lens and at that time, I was working at a photography studio, so I was able to borrow a Canon 20D with the Canon 70-200mm f2.8L lens.

Now, I am using the Canon 5D Mark III and Canon 5D Mark II bodies with Canon 16-35 f2.8L, Canon 24-70mm f2.8L Mark II and Canon 70-200mm f2.8L lenses.

My Start

I had been volunteering as the web designer for the Breaking Benjamin fan site, http://shallowbay.com, which eventually became the official website, that I designed and built.

Through that connection, the opportunity came up photography Breaking Benjamin at their show in St. Louis on August 9, 2006. I had no idea what I was doing, but I couldn’t say no. Just a few weeks ago, I photographed them for the sixth time.

In 2011, I began photographing concerts for http://www.playbackstl.com/ and have been shoot for them ever since.

10 Favorite Shots

It’s very tough for me to narrow down a list of photos to just 10, but here are just some of my favorite shots from the last 10 years of concert photography.
